Improvements to the sewer network in Bideford
A £950,000 scheme to improve the sewer network in North Devon has reached Bideford.
Over the next three months, South West Water and its H5O partners will be refurbishing the network to improve the service to residents and businesses in the town.
The scheme is part of a five-year £42 million investment in the sewer network across the region to renovate sewers identified as being at risk of collapse and to alleviate potential flooding problems.
Project manager Stephen Cross said: "Without this necessary work the sewer network will continue to deteriorate. That can lead to collapses - which cause pollution, flooding and odour.
"We will be working hard to minimise disruption to the public and businesses as far as possible while completing these essential improvements."
Work starts in Market Place, Honestone Street and Butchers Row today (Monday 23 September 2013) and will continue until Friday 4 October 2013.
Major work begins in Old Town and Meddon Street on or around Monday 7 October and will take 12 weeks to complete. Work in the Mill Street/Coldharbour area will start on or around Monday 21 October and take six weeks to complete. Work in the Westcombe Lane area also starts on or around Monday 21 October and will take two weeks to complete.
Using the latest technology, South West Water's contractors will employ 'no dig' techniques wherever possible to minimise disruption to traffic but some temporary traffic lights and road closures will be needed.
Following discussions with Devon County Council the programme has been designed to be flexible so that work can be progressed as quickly as possible. As a result of this flexibility we are unable to advise at this point the exact dates for road closures. However, all road closures will be clearly advertised in advance and diversion routes will be signposted.
All emergency services and other service providers have been informed.
