Discolouration and cloudy water

Discoloured water

Brown, orange or yellow water is usually caused by a burst main in the supply area which results in a change of flow of water. Increased flow disturbs any rust in iron pipe work, making the water discoloured and particles may also be visible.

Running your tap for a while will normally make the water run clear. If you are metered, you can apply for a run off allowance by calling our Helpline on 0344 346 1010*.

Cloudy water

Air can become trapped in the water mains and when the pressure is released as you turn on your tap, the water can appear cloudy or white.

Neither discoloured water or aerated water are likely to be harmful to health but we would not recommend using discoloured water for drinking or for washing laundry as it can taste unpleasant and cause staining of fabrics.

If you are on a meter and been affected by discolouration please use this form to apply for a run off allowance: Run off allowance application
