Investment in wind power

Wind turbine at Lowermoor Water Treatment Works
About 10% of the energy currently used by South West Water comes from renewable energy sources and we operate some 60 renewable energy installations - a mixture of hydro electric power, wind, solar and biogas schemes.

We plan to continue to invest in renewable energy and have set ambitious target to source 20% of our energy from renewables by 2020. Our renewable strategy includes increasing our wind power portfolio.

We have reviewed 22 of our operational sites where single small wind turbines could help to reduce overall energy costs.

Of these, nine were discounted for technical reasons, such as poor wind resource, and 11 others due to environmental constraints, such as potential effects on the landscape, ecology and archaeology.

Two sites only, both in Cornwall, were found where a wind turbine would help to meet operational energy demand, be environmentally acceptable and cost effective.

We are therefore seeking planning permission to develop a single small wind turbine at Newquay Sewage Treatment Works and another at Stithians Water Treatment Works to meet the sites' operational needs. These developments will help South West Water to reduce its operational costs and ensure that customers' bills are kept as low as possible.

The single 225kW wind turbine at Stithians Water Treatment Works is proposed to be sited at land west of Little Lansenmeth, Tretheague, Stithians. It will be have a maximum hub height of 40 metres with a maximum blade tip height of 58 metres.

The single 225kW wind turbine at Newquay Sewage Treatment Works is proposed to be sited at land north west of Tregair Farm, Tregair, St Newlyn East. It will be have a maximum hub height of 40 metres with a maximum blade tip height of 58 metres.
